White

"White" is a commentary on the illusionary expectation of purity. For thousands of years people – most notably women – have been covered, isolated, disenfranchised, expelled, maimed and murdered for their lack of purity, real or imagined.

Each image depicts some aspect of the natural world; each is shot in the field under natural lighting conditions. Although the subject of each image is naturally white in color, very little white actually shows in the image, which is presented in its final form in sepia.

The use of sepia toning on the images is ironic, and is intended as a commentary on the specious expectation of purity. The beauty of the natural image is not marred by the toning. Instead, each image's allure is enhanced by subtle shadow, tone and hue.

No manipulation beyond darkroom standards have been applied.
